UMMC Internal Medicine Residency Program: Clinician Researcher Track

Who: Two PGY1 medicine (or PGY2 medicine/pediatrics) residents will be selected each year to participate in this longitudinal experience. Residents will be selected from an application process; preference is given to those who desire a career in investigative medicine. 

When: The course will span two academic years. Participants receive a certificate at resident graduation after successful completion of the program. 

Course Curriculum

The goal of the track is to provide a foundation in basic science and/or clinical science research. Course curriculum will include: 

  • Didactics/journal club/roundtable discussions 
  • Participation in basic biostatistics and epidemiology courses 
  • Completion of Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training program 
  • Development of basic understanding of research methodology and study design 
  • Application of critical assessment tools in the appraisal of scientific study 
  • Completion of a review of the literature related to their research project 
  • Submission of Institutional Review Board (IRB) application 
  • Mentorship by faculty with regularly scheduled meetings 
  • Preparation of manuscript based on findings of study 
  • Preparation of research portfolio
